Guelph-Eramosa officials will meet next month to discuss the township’s response to the Dec. 22 ice storm and to review emergency protocols for the future.
“I think we did an exceptional job,” Mayor Chris White said of the municipality’s response to the storm.
He lauded the efforts of township staff members who assisted residents, deployed equipment and tried to ensure everyone was safe and comfortable during the ensuing power outage.
White said he received “a lot” of calls from residents praising the township’s efforts, and also “some” complaints – but overall the response was “phenomenal.”
That said, White told council on Jan. 13 the township should conduct a “review and debriefing” on the storm so local officials have a better idea what needs to be done for other incidents of extreme weather.
Councillor John Scott suggested the discussion should take place at a future strategic planning committee meeting, and the mayor agreed.
White said Linda Dickson, the county’s community emergency management coordinator, should attend the meeting, which would also include township staff, councillors and emergency responders.
Public works manager Saidur Rahman told council he should have a better idea of the financial impact of the ice storm by mid-February.
Council unanimously passed a resolution scheduling the ice storm review and debrief for the Feb. 19 strategic planning meeting.
